The Attlee Foundation
The Attlee Foundation has a long history of supporting and delivering innovative social projects throughout the UK and beyond. We aim to deliver academic analysis and offer expert advice on particular issues, contributing to the narrative of social integration.
As a consequence of its pioneering activity, The Foundation is in a strong position to deliver projects and research either through the Attlee Centre or through its existing partnerships with other agencies and voluntary and academic organisations in East London and nationally.
Access to opportunities is at the core of the Foundation’s activities and is reflected in its past local and international work, social policy research on issues affecting disadvantaged communities, and direct project work with young people.
The Attlee Academy
The development of the Attlee A level Academy in Tower Hamlets, New City College, Arbour Square is a multi-purpose complex with sports, adventure play and learning facilities designed to meet the needs of children, young people and the wider local community as a whole. As was originally envisaged, the Attlee Centre has now evolved into a separate community-based organisation, sharing a common commitment to Clement Attlee’s philosophy and ethos.
Bursaries and IT equipment
The Trustees have been working with the Attlee A Level Academy at New City College. Our first joint venture was a competition to find the Clement Attlee Students of the Year, with a top of the range laptop as first prize. We asked students to produce a piece of work in a medium of their choosing that showed originality, independent thought, discussion and analysis of Clement Attlee, his achievements, government, character and values. There were lots of entries and the college gave us a shortlist to choose from. These were very interesting, varied and thought provoking, making it difficult to select the winners. Our next priority is to set up a bursary scheme whereby we can help enable further education for those who might not otherwise afford it
Housing and Centre for drug users
Providing housing for young people in London’s East End, on a similar basis as the foyer projects, and a halfway house for those leaving the housing programme.
Eye Camps
Providing eye camps in India and funding for an Indian doctor to study at Moorfields Eye Hospital London, in association with the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind.
A daycare and residential center for drug users at a time when there was no government-funded support for such programmes.
